Summer has been wild. I attended two very memorable gigs this month: The Beaches sold out show in their hometown neighbourhood at a great venue called HISTORY on Queen St E; and an epic Boot & Hearts festival with the great Shania Twain. It was my first time seeing her in concert. It was an amazing day including performances by The Redhill Valleys, Robin Ottolini, and Lindsay Ell. Just as Shania was about to hit the stage, a torrential downpour coupled with a tornado warning led to an evacuation of the entire festival grounds, around 40,000 people having to find shelter. We huddled in the backstage artist catering tent, while the water pooled ankle-deep outside (I had to throw out my filthy sandals the next day). Incredibly, the crew were able to squeegee off the stage enough to make it safe for the headline show to go on. Shania was in top form, and I had her songs in my head for the rest of the week. Huge thanks to Karen at Republic Live for the VIP treatment!

If you’ve been following this blog for the past two years, you’ll know I’ve been presenting events at The Westdale theatre, including music in film nights, and Q&As with directors. I’ve felt incredibly lucky to work with such an amazing team in a gorgeous, non-for-profit venue. I’ve recently taken on the role of Venue & Events Manager, so now I’ll be spending even more time in this historic place. If you’re in Hamilton and are looking for a space for a private screening, film/photo shoot, special celebration, or concert, talk to me!

I’ll still be presenting the Music in Film series, as part of a range of film talks. This Sunday August 21 I’ll be introducing the new Canadian independent film “Carmen” starring the lovely Natascha McElhone. Director Valerie Buhagiar and Producer Coral Aiken will be taking part in a Q&A after the film. There’s a free community screening of the Hitchcock suspense classic “Strangers On A Train” on Wed Sept 7. The next music doc we’re showing is "Anonymous Club” the very interesting chronicle of Australian musician Courtney Barnett, on Sept 14. That screening will be a real celebration of Melbourne music… more details soon!

With my new gig at The Westdale, I’ll be hanging up my DJ headphones. I have a few gigs booked before my “retirement”:

I’m attempting the very challenging task of turning my brain on temporarily to write to you… if you’re wondering where I disappeared to, I decided to go offline this summer, and spend time with my five year old son during the school holidays. This is how it’s going:

It turned out to be great timing to unplug. With Roe v. Wade being overturned in the US, my feed was full of more anguish than I could process. After texting my friends that have had abortions messages of support, I deleted all social media apps off of my phone, and turned the TV on to watch something fun. I put an old episode of “Girls” on, only to find it was the one where Hannah discovers she’s unexpectedly pregnant, and has to decide whether to keep or terminate the embryo. I switched to a show even more mindless, sure to be entertaining and light… Sex and The City, only to find it was the one where Miranda. discovers she’s unexpectedly pregnant. I figured the algorithms must be messing with me… what are the chances I randomly choose 2 episodes where abortion is the topic? But the reality is that abortion is so damn common, it’s ubiquitous in our culture. It’s estimated that 25% of women will have an abortion in their lifetime.
I feel incredibly privileged that I was able to make the choice whether to become a mother, and will always advocate for a person’s right to choose.

It has been wonderful for my mental health spending time away from my computer, and more time with family, and my other loves: music, books, and film.
Woo hoo! I'm nominated for a Guild of Music Supervisor Canada award for BEST SYNC - SCENE, FEATURE FILM. for thriller "The Retreat". Licensing “Bitch” by Allie X was a huge win - a big song and very crucial scene in the film. The deadline was extremely tight, and there was a writer that controlled 3% of the publishing holding up the clearance process, causing me many sleepless nights. Check out the scene and cast your vote here.
Today WILD CHILD Season 1 drops on Bell Fibe TV1. After being given a brief to find an inspirational track from a Hamilton artist about working together and being hopeful for the future, I went through dozens of songs. It quickly became clear that Hamiltonians are a cynical bunch who write mostly sad songs (Steeltown can do that to you!). So I asked born & raised Hamilton songwriter Joe Moran to write a fresh new track. Within a day he brought me “Let’s Plant Some Trees” and it fit perfectly for the scene! There’s a music video in the works so I’ll share it with you soon.

If you’re not a Bell TV subscriber, you can follow the series at www.wildchild.tv to find out when it will be screening in more places.

Speaking of inspiration, I got to take another vacation last month to my favourite Canadian city, Montreal. It was a blissful 3-day weekend of food, fashion, and fun with friends. I capped off the trip with what might be the greatest Caesar I’ve ever had, served with a crab leg garnish!

When I last wrote I was on my way to London… what an incredible city and an awesome time! I got to check out the C2C Music Festival at O2 Arena where my man was playing with Tim Hicks. Another standout Canadian artist was the new talent Robyn Ottolini, who gave a high energy performance, and has great style as her single “Boujee On A Budget” describes.

Next up on my travels is MONTREAL! This weekend! What should I see? Where should I go? Recommendations please! This is one of my fave cities in the world and I haven’t been since pre-pandemic.

If you’re subscribed to this newsletter to follow my music supervision projects, I haven’t had as many briefs to share this year as I normally do. The projects I’ve been working on have been mostly music clearance (ie the director knows what tracks they want and they need my help to license them).

I’m currently working on a documentary about Hamilton’s James Street North, and am licensing an eclectic mix of tunes from local artists. The trailer features 2 tracks; Terra Lightfoot’s live version of the traditional folk song “In The Pines” (courtesy of Terra and Sonic Unyon Records), and Matt Jelly’s “A Southern Ontario Jingle Medley” (courtesy of Matt Jelly):

This Wednesday, April 6, we’re watching the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect. Released in 2021, it didn’t get the big screen time it deserved due to lockdowns, so I really wanted to bring it back. I’ll be talking about Aretha and the film production. After the film there will be a discussion on what we watched. I’ll also be recommending some “further reading/watching/listening” to dive into Aretha’s story. If you want to get a head start, here’s the list:

Then on April 19 we’ll revisit a classic biopic from 2004: Ray. The story of the life and career of the legendary rhythm and blues musician Ray Charles, from his humble beginnings in the South, where we went blind at age seven, to his meteoric rise to stardom during the 1950s and 1960s. Inspired by a fiercely independent mom who insisted he make his own way, he found his calling and his gift behind a piano keyboard, gaining worldwide fame for his unique blend of gospel and country.

I'm writing this just before leaving for London, my first time out of the country since the pandemic started. While I will be spending most of Women's Day in cars and airplanes, I did want to acknowledge this day, to celebrate women's achievement, raise awareness, and inspire people to take action for equality.

I had the surreal experience of stepping back into 1972 on the set of the FX Series "Mrs. America", when I answered a last minute call for background performers. I sat in the re-created office of US congresswoman Bella Abzug (played by Margo Martindale). A group of prominent feminist activists gathered to discuss the struggle to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, including Gloria Steinem (Rose Byrne), Jill Ruckelshaus (Elizabeth Banks), and Betty Friedan (Tracy Ullman).

It was the summer of 2019, and women's rights (especially reproductive rights) were under threat by the Trump administration. It was clear how meaningful the subject matter was to the absolute legends in the room. In between takes, frustrations were aired. One moment that really stood out was a speech that Rose Byrne made as Gloria Steinem, that went "How long are we supposed to wait? How many more women are going to die from botched abortions while we wait for men to feel comfortable with us having control over our own bodies?" After a particularly emotional take, the room felt so heavy and silent, and it was clear we were all very affected by those words. (Spoiler alert: women in the United States are still waiting for the ERA to be added to the constitution).

You can stream Mrs. America on Disney+, or buy it from Apple TV.

Who knows where the time goes? I didn’t write last month. There wasn’t much to share, as Ontario entered yet another lockdown and all events were cancelled. I took the opportunity of a wide open calendar to take a mini holiday in beautiful, intense Nova Scotia. A sign at the Hamilton airport reads “Travel Brings Power and Love Back Into Your Life”. It sure does. Miraculously, the airport bar was OPEN! Must be a loop hole in the whole lockdown system… if you’re in an airport, are you really anywhere at all?

In Part 2 of the series, we expand past documentary into biopics and films with a unique musical focus. We’ll see iconic 1970s performances by Elvis Presley, James Brown, Bill Withers, B.B. King & more; we’ll explore the lives of legendary artists Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin, and we’ll have some family fun at the “School of Rock”.

It kicks off with ELVIS: That’s The Way It Is on Feb 16. I couldn’t think of a more fun, upbeat, concert to lift our spirits and make us wanna boogie in our seats. Elvis kissing all those women in the audience is just unthinkable in the time we now find ourselves in!
Hope everyone you love is staying healthy and sane as this never ending pandemic continues to dominate our lives. In Ontario cases are on the rise, the Omicron variant is taking over, and I’m back to doomscrolling on Twitter every morning. Fortunately, I got into the holiday spirit earlier this month and got my gift shopping done. It helped that I DJed not one but THREE holiday markets this year, where I got some excellent gifts from local artisans.

The rest of this month I’ll be booking recordings for the rest of Season 4 of the Hamilton Film podcast. I’ll also be preparing for the next series of Music in Film Talks I’m hosting at the Westdale… I’ll be announcing the next ones soon. More info on those projects below.

I just got that intro from Austin Channing Brown’s newsletter, and it resonated with me. What you give energy to grows, and if you say Yes to every offer that comes your way, you won’t have energy to put into what really matters to you. That’s partly why I didn’t write a blog last month. I went full steam into September, trying to work at pre-pandemic levels, and quickly overwhelming my present-pandemic brain. It’s hard to say no when there are so many awesome events finally happening…I want to be a part of them all!

First up…

Hamilton Film Festival:

November 6 I’m DJing the opening night at The Westdale for the screening of LUNE. The festival turns sweet 16 this year, with the theme “Coming of Age”. I’ll be spinning a set of the best Coming Of Age film soundtracks to open the night… some of my faves are Almost Famous, Clueless, The Graduate, Ghost World, Outside Providence and Lady Bird.

November 7 I’m moderating a panel discussion on MOVING MUSIC – how Hamilton musicians and entrepreneurs are using moving images to get music seen, heard and monetized. My man Chris Altmann is going to be talking about his collaboration with Pop Engine Productions on the incredible music video for STORM WARNING.
November 14 I’ve been working on a film with an incredible group of women. It’s my first time taking on a producer’s role… I knew almost nothing about producing and have been learning as I go, with the support of my Hamilton LOFT partner Laura Ellis. We had only 3 months from pre-production to actually finishing the film in time for Hamilton Film Festival (it’s still in post, but we’ll get it done just in time!). It will be screening at the Hamilton Film Festival on Sunday November 14th at 1pm. I’d love to see some familiar faces there supporting our female-identifying crew, many of them first timers! Use code HFFLoft for 50% discount on tickets.

Created by a crew of 19 womxn, "Why Didn't I Leave?" is Hamilton LOFT's inaugural project. This short documentary challenges the stigma behind that very question - one which places blame on victims of abuse, rather than holding perpetrators accountable. The film explores some of the less recognizable forms of abuse and the overwhelming barriers many survivors face when trying to escape, while highlighting the local organizations working to support survivors.

Tickets for all Hamilton Film Festival events here

Greetings!

I recently got an email from a musician curious about covering songs for sync, so I thought I’d share it, as it’s important to know about.

Q: Recently I’ve been arranging hit pop songs for my sound (piano/strings/solo voice). In your experience, do covers of new hits have a good chance of getting synched, or is the licensing still too expensive for most productions compared to original indie music?

A: Reimagined songs in your own style are exactly the kind of covers that are popular for sync. Stay away from soundalikes – they are boring and you could risk being sued for sounding too much like the original/master recording. Even though the publishing side could still be pricey, a film or TV show could save significant money on the master side. Sometimes (especially with hip hop) if there are a lot of samples, licensing the master recording is too complicated, making cover versions more attractive.

A few tips:

- Stay clear of major “legacy” artist covers eg The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Michael Jackson, Nirvana… these are a few artists that I've heard are very difficult to clear publishing on.

- If you do want to cover a major artist, research whether their music has been used for sync in the past – eg Bob Dylan is usually very generous with licensing his publishing

- Go to the PRO website (like Songview for BMI & ASCAP) to see which writers and publishers are listed. If it has like 10 writers, it may not be an ideal sync song

- Try contacting the publisher in advance to ask if the song is available for sync licensing (they may not tell you, but worth a shot). I’ve had experiences where I’ve tried to license a song and it’s simply “not available”. There could be rights holders disputes, or the artist just doesn’t want their songs used in film.

Examples:
Ike & Tina Turner “Whole Lotta Love”

Greetings from locked-down Ontario!

To get through the past few weeks with any shred of sanity, I’ve taken a break from social media… otherwise known as “living the dream”. I’m sure you artists can relate – the constant pressure to create content, fighting with the algorithms. It’s a miracle that you’ve even found me, as I don’t pay to have my content seen. If you want one-on-one monthly contact with me directly in your email basket, please do subscribe to my monthly newsletter. It's the only way to ensure I'm not just screaming into the common void.

The other thing that’s truly keeping me sane is hiking. Even though my current environment is restricted, I can still pop in to an “essential” government-run cannabis dispensary, put my headphones on, find a trail, and walk on. I use Spotify to keep track of new releases, and wanted to share some great tunes that have put a kick in my step:

“Burn It Down” Gyasi. This dude’s wheelhouse is British 70s glam and classic rock done superbly. The Led Zeppelin vibes on this one make me wanna do rock n’ roll kicks across a stage with a glitter covered kerosene can and BURN EVERYTHING.

“Never Let A Day Go By” Todd Snider. Snatching up all the best musical elements of the 70s and 80s from the ether like a noble Protector, and delivering them back to the universe in an authentic new form. I just like the plain simple message to the song. Never let a day go by. Full stop.

“Bend The Rules” (Mndsgn Remix) Anomalie, Chromeo. Following up past pandemic faves like “Clorox Wipe”, Chromeo are back with a collab with Anomalie. You’ll hear flavours of Prince and Stevie Wonder in this “love in the time of COVID” track.

“Dream Girl” Ivy Sole. Whatever genius resulted in the combination of Smokey Robinson’s “Cruisin” with “It’s Changed” from the Lonnie Smith Afrodesia album, they achieved summertime groove perfection.

"Seven Nation Army" The White Stripes/The Glitch Mob remix. If you’re hanging somewhere between civil disobedience and total mutiny, this is your jam. Props to Third Man Records for catching the zeitgeist and bringing this monster hit back, a song I hear nearly every day as my 4 year old son constantly hums it (this track will be licensed for his future biopic, for sure)

“Diamond Studded Shoes” Yola. When this came on, I immediately stood up straighter, head and shoulders higher. Yola defies all genres, slays all categories. It’s got a great classic Elton John feel. Written about UK prime minister Theresa May’s choice of footwear while announcing public service cutbacks. Same class struggle, different decade.

“Love Should Come With A Warning” Van Morrison. That inviting organ, downbeat groove, blues lilt. It’s simply a great song that sounds like it could have come out of Big Pink.

“L’appartement” Clio & Iggy Pop. The beautiful breathy feathery French vocals, then, woah is that Leonard Cohen singing in French? *checks phone* Nope. IGGY POP! Their voices contrast like a trickling waterfall stream being sucked into an undercurrent. Trying to make sense of this sonic experience leaves my brain scrambled… in a good way.

It’s ramping up to be a busy month, with lots of projects on the go that I wanna tell you about. To start off, here are two quick tips on being successful in getting your music placed in Film and TV. They are mistakes I often see musicians make when working with music supervisors:

Respond quickly. Occasionally I’m blessed with lots of time to search for music and clear licenses, but usually I’ve been brought on in the crazy post-production period where everyone is scrambling to meet deadlines. Most of the briefs I get from other music supervisors have a submission deadline of less than 48 hours. If you are slow to check or respond to emails, you could miss out. Even if you need more time to gather the info requested, a quick email letting the music supervisor know you’re on it is helpful.

Have files organized. Whenever you record a song that you intend to pitch to music supervisors, make sure you store the file in every format that they will need. Typically a vocal and instrumental version, in both WAV and mp3, with song lyrics. Store them in a place that’s easily sharable such as Dropbox, Google Drive, or Box. If you can save the stems from your sessions, even better: there could be a time where your song is perfect, except for a flute part or something that doesn’t quite fit the vibe. If you’re very focused on pitching music for film & TV, you may want to set up a DISCO account, a file sharing service that’s the industry standard for music supervisors (using that link will give you a $20 credit when you sign up).

It’s CFMU Fundraising time: Donate to get 30 minutes with me!

It’s one of Canada’s oldest campus radio stations. I’m one of around 170 volunteers that keep the station running. Community radio is so important, as an outlet for independent musicians to have their music heard, and to train students with hands-on, on-air experience.

To help with the fundraising efforts, I’m offering 30 minute video consultations for anyone who donates a minimum of $30 to CFMU.
I don’t mean in the sense that you have nothing to do… it’s easy to fill your day with work, projects, important-feeling tasks. I’m at the stage of the pandemic where ennui has set in. Days are so routine. No trips, concerts, parties, or nights out dancing, and no end to lockdowns in sight.

For me, avoiding boredom is all about having something to look forward to (beyond Friday night YouTube music video sessions with a bottle of wine). I now understand the fascination with unboxing videos… yes it’s exactly what it sounds like – videos of people revealing the contents of their packages.

Because there is great entertainment in the anticipation of a package's arrival. My purchases fall into three categories: Wellness & Beauty, Vinyl Records, and Clothes. Sometimes in combination, like in this sweet merch pack from Mise En Scene (you’ll want to grab their phenomenally good album ‘Winnipeg, California’, featured on my latest radio show ep).

I’m finding a special thrill in ordering clothes like I have some place to go: a multi-print A-line dress that I can rock around my block this spring, or a shirt with a zebra on it that I can’t stop staring at for some reason. So watch for my unboxing videos coming at you soon on whatever social media platform I figure out how to use first!

Two books that pair well. Desmond Cole’s month by month account of a year of Black resistance and power is interspersed with his experiences of racism in Canada. It was very eye-opening to me to reflect on how different our childhoods were though we both grew up in the 1990s. Austin Channing Brown’s book addresses more subtle aspects of how racism pervades America’s workplaces and churches, and offers guidance on practicing anti-racism.

I’m writing this at a truly wonderful time for me and the majority of Earth’s citizens: Inauguration Day! On November 8, 2016, I was at The Local, a bar in Toronto, 10 months pregnant, watching a great country band, and anxiously scrolling my phone for election updates. When Trump was declared winner, I was horrified that my son, three decades after my birth, would also arrive into a world with a wealthy Republican entertainer as US president. My son Tomi turns 4 next week, and has spent a quarter of his life living in a pandemic. His dream is to visit Disney World. “As soon as the germs go away,” I tell him (both the political and viral kind). Today feels like a step closer to that dream.

Another of Tomi’s favourite activities is visiting to the local record store, Revolution Records, which is closed while Ontario is in lockdown. I was out for a walk on a sunny day, listening to my latest Spotify playlist, daydreaming about record shopping, when I realized I had nearly walked all the way to Revolution. I called them to see if my copy of Once Upon A Time In Hollywood has arrived – it had! Thank goodness we still have curb side pickup.

GUILD OF MUSIC SUPERVISORS CONFERENCE FEBRUARY

The Guild of Music Supervisors is hosting an online conference Feb 19-20, 2021 exclusively for GMS members. You don’t have to be a Music Supervisor to join – there is a “Friend of the Guild” option for songwriters and musicians. This organisation provides so many resources on music sync. I highly recommend joining!

METADATA!

Any music supervisor will tell you that metadata, the information stored in your mp3, is super important. You can (and should) include info like composer(s) and their ownership splits, genre, lyrics, year, and sync licensing contact. The Comments field is a great place to store searchable keywords related to tempo, mood, and themes. (eg uptempo dark pop sombre). This article from Synchtank is a great reference on what metadata to include in your music files.

MUSIC SUPERVISORS ON TWITTER

I’ve created a list of Music Supervisors I follow on Twitter that I’m always adding to. Often they will post active music searches, helpful articles and job opportunities. Follow the list here.

RECOMMENDED

“M Train” by Patti Smith

Reading Patti Smith is pure escapism, taking you on a journey with her through Mexico, Iceland, England, America, with plenty of stops at her favourite Greenwich Village café. Her nomadic wanderings, pilgrimages to poets’ graves, and reflections on her life with late husband Fred “Sonic” Smith, are inspirational. Her 2010 memoir, Just Kids is another must-read.

Uncle Frank

This film, set in my favourite year, 1973, is the story of the relationship between impressionable niece Beth and her favourite uncle, who hides his sexual identity from his Southern family. When his bigoted father dies, Frank returns home to confront his past. It feels like an important story to share in present times, to educate ourselves on the traumatic history members of the LGBTQ+ community have had to overcome. The film has an understated musical soundtrack featuring mostly soul and jazz, with standout tracks including “Cool Jerk” by the Capitols, and “It’s Your Thing” by The Isley Brothers. Music Supervisor Gary Calamar previously worked with director Alan Ball on the TV series “Six Feet Under”.

Dying For Sex podcast

This serial podcast covering the sexual adventures and self-discovery of a women in her 40s diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer, co-hosted by her best friend, Nikki, was equal parts entertaining, hilarious, and heartbreaking.

I don’t have to go on about what a battle this year was, but DAMN it was tough. It’s still tough. I see and feel the stress of the pandemic in the mirror, and in my aching body. I’m so grateful to my hairdresser Janine for texting me just before lockdown to offer an appointment. What did I want done? “Make me look like I just got back from California”, consolation for the two trips to LA I had to cancel in 2020. Luckily she #nailedit. Now I can keep rocking those video calls.

I've been keeping busy with film projects, and working out a good system to organize music submissions. I'll be launching a newsletter in January where i'll be asking artists to submit music, offering news and tips around music supervision, and everything I have going on in the DJ and podcasting world. Sign up here to get the newsletter.

I posted an update on the Hamilton Film podcast today. You can listen here, or continue reading for news on Season 3 and what’s been happening in the Hamilton film industry.

If you’ve listened to Season 2, you’ll know that I scrambled to finish it in the thick of the pandemic. I pre-recorded some interviews in February, and the rest I had to do virtually. My voice call recording set up wasn’t quite up to standard, but like they say, the show must go on. I was hoping I’d have Season 3 ready for December… I was holding out hope that by then, the pandemic would be over.

What I have managed to do is upgrade my computer, which triggered a series of compatibility issues with my existing equipment that I didn’t have the mindset to work through. But I’m getting there. I miss podcasting. There are a lot of exciting projects in the works in Hamilton, and I have a list of guests I’d love to have on the show. So, the plan is start recording again in January, and hope to have the new season out by early March.

This season I really want to focus on film and TV projects that were made in Hamilton. And I still want to explore each individual role in the process – particularly producing, and the lucky folks in wardrobe and costume design.

While I’ve been procrastinating over my podcast, I have been watching A LOT of stuff, and it’s really cool to see familiar sights in Hamilton pop up. One series that I absolutely loved was The Queen’s Gambit on Netflix… Seeing it solved the mystery of the vintage looking Pharmacy on the corner of King & Walnut in the International Village. It’s where Beth scored her tranquilizers and Chess magazines!

The pandemic didn’t seem to slow down filming in Hamilton. 111 film and TV productions managed to shoot here, despite being locked down between March and July. At the Cotton Factory, where I’m usually based, Guillermo del Toro was shooting his latest, ‘Nightmare Alley’, starring Bradley Cooper and Cate Blanchett. It’s the third time this Academy Award winning director has filmed in the city.

The current stats from the city indicate that there are more than 9000 Hamiltonians employed in the film industry, and more than 900 Hamilton-based film businesses.

A massive movie studio is planning to open its first phase in February 2021 in the West Harbour. The 14-acre film and TV production hub is being developed by Aeon Studio group. Once completed it’s estimated to add over 1000 new jobs.

Thanks for reading, hope you are finding peace and joy in this time, and I’ll join you again in the New Year.

Make a joyful noise,
Alysha
Put A Record Ontag:putarecordon.com,2005:Post/62943692020-04-25T14:04:42-04:002020-04-25T15:06:12-04:00It's All Happening!
Welcome!

I've launched this new site to keep track of my many projects - DJing, music supervision, my podcast, my radio show, and everything that I like in between! The benefit of being in isolation, and having all my gigs for the foreseeable future canceled, is that I can devote time to building this new site, named for my CFMU radio show, "Put A Record On". Putting a record on is kinda my philosophy... whether I'm sourcing music for a film, planning an event, getting dressed up for a night out, or entertaining friends, it all revolves around my turntables.
